Anti-GM lobbyist got phone tap warning

A "well connected and eminent" Australian businessman warned Safe Food Foundation director Scott Kinnear his emails and phones were being monitored

Safe Food Foundation director Scott Kinnear says he wouldn't be surprised if someone was spying on the organisation after an "eminent" Australian businessman warned him he was under surveillance a few years ago.

The Safe Food Foundation rose to prominence after backing organic farmer Steve Marsh in a landmark legal case about genetically modified (GM) contamination.

While the businessman's warning didn't come during the height of the GM debate, Mr Kinnear said he was still concerned about the possibility he was being monitored.

Mr Kinnear would not disclose the man's identity but described him as a well-connected individual who at the time was on Business Review Weekly's Rich 100 list.

"He said your emails and phones are being monitored ... he gave me clear instructions if I wanted to have absolutely private conversations what to do about it," Mr Kinnear said.

"He's a very eminent person in Australia, someone who has the confidence of our political leaders.

"When someone like that tells you that your phones and emails are being monitored, you have to go a long way towards believing them."

On Wednesday, Mr Marsh announced he would appeal against the West Australian Supreme Court judgment against him.

The court ruled he could not sue neighbouring farmer Michael Baxter for damages after he lost his organic certification when GM canola from Mr Baxter's farm allegedly contaminated his organic crops.
