Anti-Islam 'patriots' stand by rationale

The Patriots Defence League says reports it posed as a domestic violence advocacy group to gain incorporated status couldn't be further from the truth.

A national "patriots" club has denied masquerading as an anti-domestic violence group to gain incorporated status.

The Patriots Defence League Australia describes itself as a "national club" to defend Australia's "beautiful way of life".

The group opposes Halal certification, Islamic headdresses and "the Leftist enemy", amongst other things.

In its application to the Queensland Office of Fair Trading, the group reportedly said it wanted to raise awareness about domestic violence against women and children.

But it's been suggested the league is more concerned with anti-Islam campaigns.

The Queensland Office of Fair Trading has confirmed it received information earlier this month alleging the group was carrying out activities outside of its stated objectives.

The claim is being investigated, it said.

If PDLA is found to have operated outside its stated purpose, the office may revoke its incorporated status.

The group would have one month to reply if it received a show cause notice from the fair trading officials proposing its cancellation.

The group has used a post on its official Facebook page - which has more than 12,500 likes - to deny the allegations.

"Here is an article that couldn't be further from the truth," the post says, linking to an article published by Fairfax media.

It defended its platform as an anti-domestic violence body.

"Now if child marriage (and) beating multiple wives isn't domestic violence we really don't know what is," the post said.

PDLA also denied any involvement in the recent Reclaim Australia rallies and said a Sydney chapter caught up in a violent Lakemba brawl was a "rogue" branch.
