ANZAC ceremony being held in Malta

Another ANZAC ceremony is being organised in Malta, where hundreds of Australian and New Zealand soldiers from WWI are buried.

While Australians and New Zealanders prepare to commemorate this year's ANZAC centenary at home and in Turkey, a smaller, but significant ceremony is also being organised in Malta.

Many Australian and New Zealand casualties from Gallipoli were evacuated to Malta for medical treatment.

They were treated at the Cottonera Hospital, which is now a school - St Edwards College.

Professor John Portelli is the Chairman of the Board of Governors at the College, which he says is very proud of its role in the Gallipoli campaign.

And Professor Portelli told SBS Maltese broadcaster Marlene Scicluna he believes one of the first ANZACS to die at Gallipoli was Maltese.
