APA Group has appointed Rob Wheals as the gas pipeline company's new chief executive officer and managing director.

Mr Wheals - currently APA's group executive of transmissions - will take up the new role on July 6, the company said in a statement to the ASX on Monday.

Mr Wheals "is a strategic thinker with 'hands on' operating experience and a strong track record in delivering results," APA chairman Michael Fraser said, adding that the selection of an internal candidate showed the quality of the company's senior leadership team.

The company announced in December it was looking to replace Mick McCormack, who is retiring from APA after 13 years as chief executive and managing director.

"It is a great honour to not only lead APA, but to do so following the outstanding leadership of Mick McCormack," Mr Wheals said.

"I am picking up the baton of a business that is in a strong position".

APA shares were worth $10.21 before trade on Monday, up 20 per cent for the calendar year and 21 per cent higher than $8.44 a year ago.
