Police are appealing for two people, who may be able to assist in the investigation of the murder of a Melbourne sex worker one year ago to come forward.

The brutal murder of a Melbourne sex worker remains a mystery one year on, but police still believe two people might hold vital clues.

Tracy Connelly, 40, was found dead in her van in Greeves Street, St Kilda, with upper body and facial injuries on July 21 last year.

"Homicide squad detectives continue to appeal for a man seen walking along Vale St about 1.45am to 2am who many have seen Tracy walking, with another man, to come forward," a Victoria Police spokesman told AAP on Monday.

Police also want to speak to the driver of a dark-coloured Ford XR utility, which was seen on Vale and Greeves streets about 2.30am that day.

Both potential witnesses are not suspects.

DNA found at the scene was examined for international matches via Interpol and inquiries are still pending.

Detectives continue to check the vehicle registration details of a large number of cars seen in the area during the month Ms Connelly died.

Ms Connelly was a wonderful person and her death greatly impacted the community, St Kilda Gatehouse chief executive Sally Tonkin told ABC radio on Monday.

"She had this very sharp sense of humour, but she was also very warm and very caring," Ms Tonkin said.

"Those two combined, she was just very lovable. People who knew her just felt very drawn to her.

"Residents who met her as she was working on the street got to know her."
