People are being urged to offer a helping hand to residents in the southern Sydney suburb of Kurnell, which bore the brunt of last week's freak storms.

The Salvation Army has launched Kurnell Disaster Appeal to help residents after Wednesday's record-setting 213km/h winds and storms ripped off roofs, destroyed homes and overturned trucks, causing damage estimated to run into the tens-of-millions of dollars.

"It is in the times of challenge, such as natural disasters, that we see communities stand shoulder to shoulder to support each other," Salvation Army Major Bruce Harmer said on Monday.

Sutherland Shire Mayor Carmelo Pesce said he's been overwhelmed by the public response.

"In this time of need we've partnered up with Salvation Army because that's what they're good at," he told a media conference on Monday.

The mayor was joined by Federal Treasurer Scott Morrison and local members of the Salvation Army to call for more help for the battered suburb.

"It's going to be a journey, we are not there yet ... I know as a local community and the way we've already banded together that we can get through that together," Salvation Army's Lieutenant Brad McIver said.

"This is an opportunity for the broader public to get behind Kurnell and really support through Christmas time and provide hope for local people here," Lt McIver said.
