Amnesty International has welcomed the conviction of a Hong Kong woman for abusing her former Indonesian domestic worker.

44-year-old Law Wan-tung was arrested in January last year amid allegations she had seriously harmed Erwiana Sulistyaningsih. who left her employer and sought medical help in Indonesia.

Amnesty says the ruling highlights the plight of migrant domestic helpers in Asia and the Middle East.

It says the case is a wake-up call for authorities to stop the widespread exploitation of tens-of-thousands of women.

Amnesty's East Asia Director, Roseann Rife told Zara Zaher the case involved several domestic workers.
