Apple will start taking orders on Thursday for its most powerful desktop computer yet.

The cylinder-shaped Mac Pro is one-eighth the volume of the previous model, standing just over 25cm in height, and starts at $4000 for a model with a quad-core processor.

It can be upgraded with a faster processor, more memory, and other attributes.

The computer is targeted at Apple's traditional niche audience of designers, graphic artists, and other professionals who require high-end computing power.

The Mac Pro is not yet available for in-store pick up. Customers must order it online.
