Apple's next big thing, the Apple Watch, will hit Australian shelves on April 24 at a starting price of $499.

A mid-range model will start at $799 and a luxury 18-karat gold version at $14,000, the company revealed on Tuesday.

Pre-orders open on April 10, when preview watches will also become available to try on in Apple stores by appointment.

Australia has been selected as one of nine launch countries for the launch, alongside China and the US.

But given the nature of timezones, an Australian will likely be the first in the world to walk out of a store with one of the gadgets on their wrist.

The timepiece is the first new product category launched by the world's premier technology company since the iPad five years ago.

Apple will be hoping to kickstart the smartwatch market, which remains small despite several attempts in recent years by the likes of Sony, LG, and Samsung.

"Apple Watch begins a new chapter in the way we relate to technology," said chief executive Tim Cook, who spoke at an event in San Francisco.

He described it as the most personal device Apple has created.

The watch connects wirelessly to a user's iPhone and is designed for messaging, calls and health apps.

The watch can also be used to view pictures, monitor news and connect to social media.

Cook says the device will have "all-day battery life" - about 18 hours.

PRICES

* Apple Watch "Sport": $499 for 38mm, $579 for 42mm

* Apple Watch: $799 or $1629

* Apple Watch "Edition": from $14,000.
