Applications flow for Debbie assistance

More than 300 farmers and small businesses hit by Cyclone Debbie have submitted applications for natural disaster grants.

More than $450,000 in government assistance has so far been paid out to Queensland farmers and small businesses affected by Cyclone Debbie.

The Queensland government says it has received more than 300 applications for natural disaster grants in the past three weeks, more than half of which have been from farmers.

The number is expected to rise over the next few weeks.

More than 100 applications have so far been approved, with $458,000 paid out so far.

Farmers and small businesses affected by the cyclone and associated flooding are eligible for grants of up to $25,000.

The grants were the subject of a dispute between the Queensland and federal governments last month, with Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce accusing the state of being too slow to get its application for Commonwealth funding together.

Cyclone Debbie tore through the north Queensland coast in March, causing hundreds of millions of damage to crops and infrastructure and damaging homes.
