The national body representing retailers says it wants to see greater transparency concerning the use of low-paid overseas workers by Australian clothing companies.
Questions about working conditions for garment-makers in developing nations gained international prominence after the collapse, earlier this year, of a Bangladeshi factory complex in which more one thousand people died.
The clothing company Cotton On is reportedly one of several Australian-based retailers who've signed on to a legally-binding international accord pushing for safety inspections in Bangladesh's garment factories.
And K-mart Australia is also said to be willing to disclose the locations of its overseas clothing manufacturing sources.
The Australian Retailers Association Executive Director, Russell Zimmerman, told Ildi Amon more needs to be done to ensure Australian fashion retailers using overseas workers are open about the way they go about it.
