Jackie Areson has become the first Australian in 12 years to qualify for the women's 5000m final at a world athletics championships.

Areson, 24, holds dual Australian and American citizenship but was cleared to run for Australia in May, despite representing the US at last year's world indoor championships.

She was eighth in the fastest of the two 5000m heats on Wednesday in 15 minutes 40.21 seconds.

Two-time Olympic champion Meseret Defar from Ethiopia was the fastest overall qualifier in 15:22.94.

The last Australian woman to compete in a world 5000m final was Benita Willis in 2001.
