Army used 'excessive force' against protesters

Amnesty International says it has evidence Egyptian security forces used a disproportionate amount of lethal force against civilians during recent protests in Cairo.

An international human rights group says it has evidence Egyptian security forces used a disproportionate amount of lethal force against civilians during recent protests in Cairo.

It comes after at least 51 people, mostly believed to be supporters of the ousted Muslim Brotherhood-backed President Mohamed Morsi, were killed in clashes with the army.

The Muslim Brotherhood says police and troops massacred their supporters as they performed dawn prayers, while the army says it came under attack by terrorists.

But Amnesty International's Diana Eltahawy told Zara Zaher testimonies gathered after the demonstrations suggest the military used excessive force, including with an intention to kill.
