The Association of Southeast Asian Nations has marked its first Dengue Day in Indonesia, with the date chosen to coincide with the month in which dengue infections in the region typically peak.
ASEAN said it hoped to use the day to increase public awareness of the disease and help reduce the risk of transmission.
In a press release about the event, ASEAN said member states must acknowledge that they shoulder a large part of the global burden of dengue, and must collaborate across the region.
New strategies, and a focus on long-term prevention rather than solely treatment were also key to combating the disease, the press release said.
