Virgin Australia has delayed all flights between Australia and Bali on Thursday, as volcanic ash continues to shroud the Indonesian holiday island.

Unfavourable winds are pushing ash from Mount Raung in Indonesia back towards Denpasar, forcing the closure of the city's airport, the Volcanic Ash Advisory Centre says.

The ash can choke jet engines and destroy aeroplane bodywork.

All daytime Virgin Australia flights to and from Bali will be delayed for up to one hour and 55 minutes on Thursday.

But a spokesman for the airline said additional flights will be scheduled if conditions over Denpasar improve, with passengers to be advised of new flight details.

Virgin Australia scrapped all 10 of its Wednesday services into and out of Bali, after authorities advised it was no longer safe to fly.

Jetstar has already cancelled three flights and was also forced to turn around a Melbourne to Bali service because of ash spewing from Mount Raung, about 150km west of Bali's Denpasar airport.

On Wednesday afternoon, Jetstar announced it would postpone its evening flights from Sydney and Melbourne to Denpasar by several hours while the situation is assessed again.

Across the Tasman, Air New Zealand has postponed at least one Bali-bound flight.

All three airlines have promised regular updates on future scheduled services, with customers advised to check their websites.

Earlier this month, thousands of Australians were stranded for extended periods in Bali due the threat of the ash cloud.

Virgin and Jetstar flights were severely disrupted, and the airlines had to scramble to put on extra services when conditions finally cleared.
