Ashgrove contest will be tight: Jones

The Labor candidate who hopes to oust Premier Campbell Newman says the battle will be much closer than the polls suggest.

The woman who wants to topple Queensland Premier Campbell Newman says she expects their election contest to go down to the wire.

Labor candidate Kate Jones lost her inner-Brisbane seat of Ashgrove to Mr Newman during the Liberal National Party's landslide election win in 2012.

While recent opinion polls indicate Ms Jones has more support in the electorate than the premier, she says the battle for Ashgrove will be tight.

"I know that this will go down to the wire, I absolutely knew that from the moment I made my decision (to stand)" she told Fairfax radio on Wednesday.

"But I made my decision to stand because so many people in the community in which I live approached me, at the local park, at the local shops, walking my dog in the morning, to say `please Kate, can you run'."

Ms Jones said Mr Newman backtracked on promises to keep public service jobs safe after the last election, and people wanted to send the premier a message.

"There are people that are hurting in this community because of his decisions and I felt compelled to ensure the people in this electorate had a candidate that they could vote for and know would stand up for them."

Ms Jones needs a swing of just 5.7 per cent to defeat Mr Newman, while her party faces an uphill battle to achieve a uniform swing of around 11 per cent to achieve victory.
