ASIC bans former ANZ adviser for 10 years

ASIC says Ben Cheung was not adequately trained or competent to provide financial services despite being an authorised ANZ representative.

A former ANZ financial adviser has been banned for 10 years by the corporate watchdog for a string of offences including forging customers' signatures and creating false bank documents.

The Australian Securities and Investments Commission says NSW-based Ben Cheung was not adequately trained or competent to provide financial services when he committed the offences between 2013 and 2014, despite being an authorised ANZ representative.

"Cracking down on behaviour like this goes to the heart of maintaining consumer trust and confidence," ASIC deputy chair Peter Kell said on Thursday.

ASIC is aiming to restore confidence in the financial planning industry following a scandal that also engulfed Macquarie Group, National Australia Bank and Commonwealth Bank.
