ASIO redoubles efforts after UK attack

ASIO has offered the UK its support if needed following the terrorist attack in Manchester that killed 22 people.

Australia's security and intelligence officers have redoubled their efforts to stave off a terror attack on home soil following the deadly bombing in Manchester.

ASIO director-general Duncan Lewis branded the attack, which killed 22 people, an act of cruelty and pre-meditated murder.

He has since been in contact with his counterpart in the UK, MI5 director-general Andrew Parker, to offer Australia's support if required.

"I've been horrified by this act," he told a Senate estimates hearing late on Thursday night.

"Attacks such as this targeting some of society's most innocent cause my officers at all levels - both here in Australia and overseas - to redouble their focus and effort to counter this menacing threat."

Mr Lewis has advised the federal government to keep the national terror threat level at 'probable', where it has been since September 2014.

But that level is under constant and close review.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has, however, upgraded its advice for those travelling to the UK to exercise a high degree of caution.
