Assange lawyers seek arrest halt

Julian Assange's lawyers have called for a request from Sweden to extradite the WikiLeaks founder to be removed.

Lawyers for Julian Assange have taken legal action in Sweden aimed at withdrawing an arrest warrant for the WikiLeaks founder.

He faces sex allegations in Sweden - which he denies - but refuses to travel to be interviewed by the authorities because he believes he will be extradited to the United States.

Mr Assange has spent two years in the London embassy of Ecuador, which has granted him political asylum.

His lawyers said that as a result of new information, the request from Sweden to extradite Mr Assange should be removed.

Mr Assange said last week there was a "significant risk" of being extradited to the United States if he leaves the embassy.

Speaking on the second anniversary of his dramatic arrival, he made it clear he will remain inside the building until the impasse over his future is broken.

He fears that if he goes to Sweden he will be taken to the United States, where a long-running investigation is continuing into WikiLeaks and its involvement with former solder Chelsea Manning, who has been jailed for 35 years over the leaking of secret intelligence.

Mr Assange has offered to be interviewed by Swedish investigators inside the London embassy, but they have declined to travel to the UK to question him about the allegations.
