Overshadowed by the events in Russia, a huge asteroid tracked by scientists has whizzed safely past the earth.

Around 45 metres wide, 2012 DA 14 passed us at a distance of a mere 27,000 kilometres - closer than some satellites.

Observatories in Australia recorded what the space agency called the 'closest ever predicted approach to Earth, for an object this large'.

Some experts wonder whether the extraordinary events may be linked.

Professor Frank Watson gives SBS his take on the two astronomical events.
