Asus targets Samsung with 8-inch tablet

Asus has launched a $329 8-inch tablet, setting up a direct competition with Samsung's Galaxy Tab 3.

Asus has added an 8-inch tablet to its MeMO Pad line, setting up a direct competition with Samsung's popular Galaxy Tab 3.

The ASUS MeMO Pad 8, available from Harvey Norman for $329, weighs 350 grams and sports a 1280x800-pixel display.

It comes with 16GB of onboard storage, which can be expanded via a micro-SD card slot, and is powered by a 1.6 gigahertz quad-core processor.

The rear-facing camera shoots in five megapixels, while one on the front takes 1.2-megapixel shots.

ASUS says the battery will last for up to nine hours playing HD video.

The price and size puts the tablet in direct competition with the $328 Samsung's Galaxy Tab 3.

The devices, which both run the Jelly Bean version of Google's Android operating system, have nearly identical specifications.

Samsung's tablet has a slightly less powerful processor, but is also about 35 grams lighter.

Asus launched 7- and 10-inch versions of the MeMO Pad in 2013. They cost $199 and $399, respectively.
