The mental health of asylum seekers in the Australian detention network is coming under renewed scrutiny.
A senate inquiry has heard that about 30 per cent of detainees have mental health issues, with that number expected to rise in offshore detention facilities.
It follows confirmation that some women on Christmas Island have attempted self-harm.
It's been reported the women tried to end their lives because they believed their orphaned children would be allowed to settle in Australia.
Former refugee "Tenneh" has pleaded with the Australian government to give women special consideration for refugee status.
"Tenneh" says she was forced to leave three children behind when fleeing Sierra Leone, after an attack on the police station where she worked.
She eventually resettled in Australia, after initially seeking protection in Guinea.
She spoke with Rhiannon Elston about the mental impact of her journey.
