Asylum seeker sent to Aust for treatment

Immigration Minister Scott Morrison has confirmed that a 15-year-old girl has been transferred from Nauru to Australia for medical treatment.

A teenage asylum seeker detained on Nauru has been sent to Australia to receive medical treatment after she reportedly harmed herself.

The 15-year-old girl was transferred to Australia on Friday, Immigration Minister Scott Morrison confirmed.

"It is long-standing government practice not to confirm or comment on reports of individual acts of self-harm," a spokesperson for the minister said.

"The girl is currently in Australia receiving medical treatment."

Refugee advocate Ian Rintoul said the girl is from Iran and had self-harmed. Her mother is accompanying her while she receives treatment in Australia.

Mr Rintoul said there had been a rise in protests and incidents of self harm on the Pacific island after detainees were last week shown a video of Mr Morrison announcing that temporary protection visas would not apply to Nauru.

Detainees felt a sense of "indefinite insecurity" he said, and weren't sure if they would be eventually forced to resettle in Cambodia, which on Friday signed an agreement with Australia to accept refugees.

The Cambodia deal has been strongly criticised by refugee advocates, including the UN's refugee agency.
