An asylum seeker support group in Adelaide says the federal government has cancelled much needed funding following a review of Commonwealth grants programs.

Welcome to Australia's "Welcome Centre" was awarded $160,000 by the former Labor government under the Building Multicultural Communities Program for the current financial year.

It's now received an email from the Department of Social Services stating the offer of financial assistance has been withdrawn.

Spokeswoman Kate Leaney says she's been told the Centre is one of almost 400 community organisations to be affected.

Ms Leaney told Kristina Kukolja it's a damaging blow to the volunteer-based initiative which is heavily reliant on government funding.
