At least 18 dead in Peru road accident

At least 18 people are dead and 40 have been injured after a bus flipped off a Peru highway.

An intercity bus has veered off a Peruvian highway and flipped over, killing at least 18 people in the crash, officials say.

Another 40 people were injured in Friday's accident, which took place in the central province of Junin.

Passengers said the bus left the road after the driver fell asleep at the wheel, according to the authorities.

Official statistics say more than 2500 people died in accidents in Peru, infamous for its dangerous roadways.
