Athletics Australia chief quits

Dallas O'Brien has quit as Athletics Australia's chief executive, a month after the announcement of an independent review into the sport.

Athletics Australia's chief has quit a month after the announcement of a sweeping review into the sport.

Dallas O'Brien has resigned as the peak body's chief executive after four years in the job.

The organisation's president David Grace, who last month announced an independent review of the sport, said O'Brien wanted to pursue other opportunities.

"He has made a significant contribution," Grace said in a statement on Friday.

O'Brien felt it was the appropriate time to pursue other career opportunities.

"I have truly enjoyed my time at Athletics Australia, however the time is right for me to move on to new challenges," he said in a statement.

In early September, Grace said an independent review would be chaired by former Australian cricket coach John Buchanan.

Grace said at the time there were systematic issues facing athletics, including dwindling participation and fragmented governance.

The review panel, which includes former sprinter Melinda Gainsford-Taylor, will report by the end of the year.
