ATO cracking down on rental claims

The ATO is keeping an eye on deduction claims on rental properties, particularly holiday homes in popular destinations.

The Australian Tax Office is cracking down on people claiming excessive deductions on their rental properties.

Assistant deputy commissioner Adam Kendrick said some taxpayers are claiming rental deductions for holiday homes that appear higher than expected when compared to the rental income being reported.

"We are paying particular attention to excessive deductions claimed for rental properties, especially those located in popular holiday destinations around Australia," he said in a statement on Sunday.
