ATO now more measured in collecting debts

The Inspector-General says the ATO will be taking circumstances of taxpayers more into account when chasing tax debts.

The Australian Taxation Office has taken heed of complaints about the way it collects tax debts, admitting that its approach has been "random and ad hoc".

Inspector-General of Taxation Ali Noroozi, releasing his review of debt tax collection on Tuesday, said the ATO is developing new processes based on the circumstances of taxpayers to determine the "right action at the right time".

Mr Noroozi said the review was prompted by concerns over the consistent escalation of tax debt and unfair recovery actions taken by the ATO, while noting that collectable tax debt had grown over the decade to $20 billion in 2013/14.
