Attorney-General encourages imams to work with him

The federal AG is stressing the importance of relations between the government and the Muslim community.

The Attorney-General is stressing the importance of relations between the Government and the Muslim community after meeting with six Australian imams in Canberra.

The meeting was held to discuss cooperation on curbing what the Government calls the radicalisation of young men.

The Federal Government has confirmed at least 58 Australians are fighting in Iraq and Syria.

Attorney-General George Brandis says Australians fighting overseas pose one of the most serious security concerns in years and he will introduce laws to try to stop it.

He says the community leaders are vital partners in curbing the flow of Australians to fighting groups such as the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria, now calling itself the Islamic State.

Amanda Cavill reports.
