Audi dismisses report on upcoming F1 entry

An Audi spokesman says a report linking the carmaker with F1 is "pure speculation which requires no further comment".

German carmaker Audi has dismissed a report it's set to join Formula One in 2018 and end its sports car racing engagement at the same time.

The Auto Bild paper said on its website Audi had agreed in principle to join the elite series in a possible partnership with former world champions Red Bull.

But an Audi spokesman on Monday called the report "pure speculation which requires no further comment," and refuted the claim they would give up competing in the German Touring Car and World Endurance Championship.

Audi is part of the Volkswagen Group which was last week also linked with an engagement at Red Bull in a report by the BBC which cited its pundit Eddie Jordan, a former F1 driver and team owner.

This was swiftly dismissed by Volkswagen on the weekend.

Red Bull are in search of a new engine supplier as their partnership with Renault will end prematurely after the season.

F1 top team Mercedes have declined to give them power units and they are now in talks with Ferrari over an engagement for two or three years.
