The Australian Council of Trade Unions says the federal government's Commission of Audit has ventured outside of its terms of reference by making recommendations about the minimum wage.

The Commission wants the government to create a minimum wage benchmark set at 44 per cent of average weekly earnings.

The ACTU says this is unrelated to government expenditure, and would mean a cut of over $130 per week to the minimum wage, which is currently around $620 per week for the full-time employed.

ACTU President Ged Kearney is speaking with Kristina Kukolja.
