Aurizon's coal volumes drop

Aurizon hauled five per cent less coal in the December quarter but managed to boost its iron ore volumes.

Rail freight operator Aurizon has hauled less coal in the December quarter but has increased iron ore volumes.

Aurizon hauled 51.8 million tonnes during the three months to December 31, five per cent less than a year ago, while iron ore volumes lifted two per cent to 6.2 million tonnes.

Total coal volumes for 2015 fell four per cent to 104.4 million tonnes, while iron ore was three per cent lower at 12.5 million tonnes.

Aurizon said that given commodity prices were at record lows, it was in talks with a small number of non-coal customers about contract changes.
