Aus horse activists rally on racing whips

The Coalition for the Protection of Racehorses is rallying across Australia, calling for sponsors to support whip-free racing.

Animal activists are calling for horse racing sponsors to lead the way by supporting an Australian-first whip-free race.

More than 50 people are expected to rally outside Myer in Melbourne's CBD on Saturday asking the spring racing carnival sponsor to lead a change in the racing industry.

Protests are also planned for Sydney, Brisbane, Hobart and Perth.

Campaign director Elio Celotto says Myer is in the position to bring about positive change to the treatment of racehorses in Australia.

Myer acknowledged the concerns of animal welfare advocates but said it was a matter for racing authorities rather than sponsors.

"We believe (their concerns) are better referred to the relevant governing bodies of the Australian Jumping Racing Association or Racing Victoria," the spokesman said.

"Myer supports racing through its links to fashion. This is an issue to be determined by the relevant governing racing bodies across Australia that are empowered to oversee racing policy across the country."
