Australia have been handed a tough Commonwealth Games pool assignment against England, with the Sevens rugby draw for Glasgow announced on Tuesday.

The Delhi silver medallists must defy their current IRB ranking of fifth if they're to defeat fourth-placed England and finish top of Pool D.

Australia should win their opening pool clash against Sri Lanka, but there will be plenty on the line when Michael O'Connor's team go head-to-head with England on Saturday July 26.

The winner of that match will likely play Wales in the quarter final stage on Sunday's final day, but the loser will be expecting to face the might of Samoa in a sudden-death clash.

Four-time Commonwealth gold medallists New Zealand open their account against Canada, with Scotland the toughest opponent they'll face in Pool A.

Meanwhile South Africa and Kenya will be the favourites to go through in Pool B.

Australia's next stop on the IRB Sevens circuit is later next month when the tournament moves to Japan.
