Aus to play Fiji in Vancouver Sevens QF

A quarter-final against Fiji awaits Australia's men's rugby sevens team after they finished second in their pool on day one of the Vancouver tournament.

Australia's men's rugby sevens team are through to the quarter-finals of the Vancouver tournament, after two wins and a loss in the pool stage on Sunday (AEDT).

Australia will play Fiji in the quarter-finals on Monday (AEDT) after wins against France (12-7) and Japan (36-7) and a loss against USA (29-5).

Young gun Liam McNamara notched a hat-trick of tries against Japan while Lachie Anderson's star continues to rise after some dominant performances in the gold jersey.

Australia coach Andy Friend said it was disappointing to concede the opening try in each of their pool games.

"We need to have a look at the way we're starting," Friend said.

"We just couldn't get our way into the game against USA, we said possession is everything and we turned it over so before we knew it we were out of the game at 24-nil."

"Again the young blokes are the ones leading the way for us. I'm pleased for those young fellas but just really disappointed with how we finished the day against USA."

Friend added that the team most prepared to put their body on the line would win the quarter-final.

"They (Fiji) are definitely beatable, we know that. We challenged them in Vegas last week and ran them close but let in a couple of easy tries.

"We will definitely have to lift our performance based on that last game against USA though."
