Australian batsman Phil Jaques has signed a short-term contract with Nottinghamshire for next season, the English county side announced on Wednesday.

The 34-year-old, who scored 770 runs for Yorkshire in the County Championship last season, will be contracted to Notts until mid-June 2014.

"Phil has scored runs consistently for Yorkshire over the past couple of seasons and he is highly regarded within the game for his ability and for his character," Notts director of cricket Mick Newell said.

Jaques, who has also played for county club Worcestershire, said: "I've spoken to a few of the Australian players who have played for Nottinghamshire and they all speak very highly of the set-up. I've got good memories of playing at Trent Bridge.

"A short-term deal fits nicely for me with having a young family and I look forward to making a contribution."

Jaques, who played 11 Tests for Australia, retired from domestic first class cricket at the end of last summer to move to Britain with his family.
