Aussie boxer knocked out in Russia

Aussie fighter Ben McCulloch has been knocked out in the second round by Russian boxer Fedor Chudinov in Moscow.

Australian boxer Ben McCulloch is doing well despite being left "a little bit dazed" from a brutal knockout loss to Russian Fedor Chudinov in Moscow.

The previously unbeaten McCulloch laid face down for several minutes after being hit with a crunching right hand in the second round of Thursday's (Friday AEDT) fight for the vacant WBA interim super-middleweight belt.

He required medical help before walking out of the ring and was taken to hospital for observation.

Manager Mike Altamura said the Bondi-based fighter had been "a little bit dazed" after the blow, but recovered within a half hour of the fight ending.

He underwent obligatory checks on the commission's recommendation as a safety precaution, Altamura explained.

But the emotional effects of the loss could take the 32-year-old a bit longer to get over.

"I know Ben will have an introspective perspective on this," Altamura told AAP.

"But true champions can overcome these kinds of challenges."

With no plans set for his next fixture, he said it could be some time before the Australian enters the ring again.

"When guys suffer these kinds of defeats, sometimes it might take a few months before they get back in the gym," Altamura said.

"We'll see what happens when the dust settles."

The unbeaten Chudinov, brother of interim WBA middleweight champion Dmitry Chudinov, moves to a 12-0 career record, 10 wins by knockout.

McCulloch, fighting for the first time in Europe, drops to 14-1.

In addition to Fyodor Chudinov's interim belt, the WBA also recognises Britain's Carl Froch as its world champion for the division and Andre Ward of the United States as super champion.
