Fresh reports of atrocities are emerging from South Sudan, where thousands of people have been killed in recent fighting between government troops and rebel forces.

Some of the worst fighting has been around the town of Bor, the capital of eastern Jonglei State, which has changed hands four times since mid-December.

This week, the devastated town went back under government control, and its mayor - Australian citizen Nhial Majak Nhial - has just returned.

He told David Chiengkou from SBS Radio's Dinka program, that civilians killed by the rebels included hospital patients, and a group of women sheltering in a church.
