Aussie crime bosses to lose dodgy wealth

Criminals will have unexplained money and assets confiscated under a plan to stifle the operation of serious and organised crime syndicates across the country.

Taking unexplained wealth from criminals across Australia is part of the government's plan to target illegal operations costing the nation upwards of $36 billion a year.

Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton says serious and organised crime syndicates are operating in an increasingly fluid way across state and territory borders.

"Depriving criminals of their wealth is a key measure in combating these insidious individuals," he said on Wednesday.

The government has introduced legislation allowing law enforcement agencies to confiscate the assets of criminals where they can't demonstrate the wealth has been lawfully obtained.

The powers will apply regardless of which state or territory the criminal behaviour occurred in.

Mr Dutton said the scale and threat of crime syndicates required a national approach.
