Perth teenager Maddison Keeney won gold on Friday in the three-metre springboard final at the FINA diving Grand Prix in Madrid.

17-year-old Keeney held her nerve in a hotly contested final, taking the lead with her final dive to edge out Chinese pair Lin Qu and Chunting Wu.

Keeney finished Year 12 in Perth last year and moved to Brisbane at the start of 2014 year to improve her chances of international success.

Australia's Anabelle Smith finished fifth.

Matthew Mitcham had mixed results in his return to top-class diving.

After strong performances in the preliminary and semi-final stages of the 10-metre platform, he was only able to finish fifth in the final of his Beijing gold medal event.

And Melissa Wu and Rachel Bugg combined to win silver in a small field in the 10-metre synchro.
