Aussie Farmers Direct customers hacked

Food delivery company Aussie Farmers Direct has been targeted by hackers who posted the details of thousands of customers online.

Thousands of Aussie Farmers Direct customers have had their private information posted online in a hacking breach.

The food delivery company was the target of an extortion attempt by international hackers, who demanded a six-figure sum of cash before posting the information of more than 5,000 customers on October 30.

Names, address, phone numbers and emails of former and existing customers were posted publicly on an external website before being pulled, the company said.

"A couple of days ago we were able to get the list of customer details pulled out from the website where they had been posted," Aussie Farmers Direct spokesperson Jim Cooper told AAP.

In a statement to customers, the company said the information posted posed minimal risk to customers.

"The data elements that were released are generally all used publicly, so we think any risk to customers is low, but we understand concerns about identity theft," the company said.

The Australian Federal Police told AAP they were contacted by Aussie Farmers Direct about the breach but are not investigating, instead advising them to update their virus protection.

Aussie Farmers Direct says it has taken preventative measures and is working with its banking partners, the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner and IT security experts to avoid another breach.

It joins a growing list of Australian companies that have had data breaches in recent months.

Kmart Australia and David Jones both confirmed their customers' details were hacked in seperate incidents in October.

Up to 12,500 customers from outdoor clothing company Patagonia may also have had their bank details stolen in a breach last week.

Customers worried about the Aussie Farmer Direct breach are asked to call the company's call centre on 1300 645 562.
