Australia's Russ Henshaw has been pipped for gold in the men's slopestyle at the snowboard and freestyle skiing world championships in Austria.

Henshaw, on Wednesday (Thursday AEDT), fell agonisingly short of claiming gold, with his total of 91.8 a mere 0.8 points behind Swiss Fabian Boesch.

For much of the final it looked as if the 24-year-old would prevail, having grabbing the lead with a score of 90.6 in the first of his three runs.

He backed that up with his best run, earning a 91.8 from the judges, to consolidate his place atop the standings.

However, the 17-year-old Boesch recovered from a crash on his opening run with a near-perfect second effort, which scored 92.6, to steal the win from Henshaw.

American Noah Wallace finished in the bronze medal position.

"A couple of the runs were crazy so it's really nice to get up on the podium," Henshaw said.

"I can't remember the last time I put all three runs down and stood on the podium. I'm pretty pumped.

"At the end of the day the gold could have gone either way."

The silver adds to Henshaw's 2011 bronze medal, won at Park City Mountain in the United States, and continues Australia's impressive performance this week, following golds to snowboarder Scott James and aerial skier Laura Peel and Sunday's bronze to Britt Cox in the women's moguls.

Australia's haul of four medals places them in equal third on the overall tally, level with China, and behind powerhouses the United States, who lead with 10 events to go, and Canada.
