The iconic king of the car jungle, Holden, is facing a life and death battle over the next few weeks – its future hinging on the federal election, with commonwealth funding critical for its survival.
Detractors say taxpayers shouldn't prop up the auto industry; supporters say it's an investment in jobs and cheaper than welfare.
South Australia's Premier Jay Weatherill is one of those supporters.
He spoke exclusively with World News Australia's Karen Ashford at the site of Holden's former Birkenhead assembly plant, in its heyday one of five plants across the nation; now derelict with only a mosaic remaining amidst the weeds.
It's a fate Mr Weatherill says he doesn't want to befall the company's only remaining Australian operation, at Elizabeth.
