Jarrod Lyle has walked away from his first US golf tournament since being diagnosed with cancer for a second time a proud man.

The Australian fired a two-under 69 in the final round of the Web.com Tour's Midwest Classic in Kansas on Sunday to finish tied for 11th, eight shots behind American winner Zack Sucher.

Lyle hasn't made a competitive start in the United States since February 2012, when he began treatment for a recurrence of leukaemia.

"Everything's good," he told PGATour.com after finishing 72 holes.

"The body's held up well. I've done a lot of good things.

"I think the biggest positive is the fitness side of it, that in the heat I got around four days and got around comfortably.

"The golf game's been in good shape for a while but we had to wait and see if it fared well in tournament golf."

The 32-year-old Victorian was under par each of the four days and at one point during his bogey-free opening round was leader of the pack.

Lyle said it didn't take him long to get back into the "tournament frame of mind" and had a lot of positives to take out of his performance, despite some struggles.

"I'd give myself an A, probably an A-minus," he said.

"I didn't really get many of those in school so I'm happy with it."

"I'm ecstatic with the way the week has gone. Better than expected."

Lyle thanked all the players, officials and caddies who wore Leuk the Duck badges in support of children with cancer during the tournament.

He will take the next week off before returning to the Web.com Tour for consecutive weeks at the Price Cutter Charity Championship (August 4-10) and the News Sentinel Open (August 11-17) - both warm-up events before his return to the PGA Tour next season.
