The Australian editor of a Thai newspaper facing criminal defamation charges has appealed to the federal government to speak out on his behalf.
Alan Morison and a Thai colleague from the Phuket Wan English-language paper face their first full court hearing on Monday for allegedly defaming the country's naval forces
If found guilty, Alan Morison could face up to 14 years jail and heavy fines.
At issue are quotes the paper carried from the Reuters news agency, alleging Thai authorities were involved in the trafficking of Rohingya asylum seekers to Malaysia.
Alan Morison told Stefan Armbruster he believes his paper is being singled out, as other Thai publications also carried the Reuters material.
