An Australian man has reportedly been sentenced to death in China after being caught trying to smuggle methamphetamine to Australia.

Bengali Sherrif was arrested at Guangzhou airport in June last year, along with Ibrahim Jalloh from Queensland.

Until now their plight has remained secret.

It's believed the trial for Jalloh has not yet begun.

DFAT has not confirmed the reports.
