A - Australia's Marinko Matosevic was knocked out of the Atlanta Open in the opening round on Sunday, losing to American struggler Ryan Harrison 6-2 2-6 6-3.
The 73-ranked Matosevic was unable to unsettled the out-of-form Harrison, who has drifted from 43rd in the world 12 months ago to his current ranking of 132nd.
In the recent grass-court season, he won just one main-draw match in five tournaments, so the three-set success against Matosevic on the Atlantan hard-court came as sweet relief.
Australia's best hope, seventh seed Lleyton Hewitt gets his tournament underway against France's Edouard Roger-Vasselin on Tuesday while qualifier Matthew Ebden will face Croation Ivo Karlovic.
In a battle between two US players awarded wild cards, Rhyne Williams served 16 aces as the 22-year-old from Knoxville, Tennessee, beat 20-year-old Denis Kudla 7-5 6-4.
