The Australian men's hockey team have thrashed Japan 7-2 in their final pool game of the World League semi-finals.

The Kookaburras took the lead after just 12 seconds of the game as captain Mark Knowles flicked the ball into the net for a penalty stroke goal.

Jake Whetton then scored a field goal five minutes in with a reverse flick from directly in front of the net.

In the 26th minute Whetton had his second as the Australian side went out to a 3-0 lead.

The procession continued for Australia as they romped out to a 6-0 lead.

Japan dragged two back but the Kookaburras finished the scoring through Jeremy Hayward for the final result of 7-2.

The Kookaburras next play in the quarter-finals on Wednesday.
