Aussie men in water polo World Cup final

Australia have qualified for the men's water polo World Cup final for the first time after a penalty shootout semi-final win over Germany.

Australia's men's water polo team is into the gold medal match at the FINA World Cup for the first time.

The Australians pipped hosts Germany 11-10 in a semi-final to progress to a showdown against heavyweights Hungary, to be played on Sunday from 2230 AEST.

Australia's men's team had never previously made the gold medal match at the cup, which is held every four years.

In the semi-final, the Australians held their collective nerve in a penalty shootout after scores were locked 8-8 at fulltime.

Australian 'keeper Joel Dennerley made three saves in the shootout with Andrew Ford converting the match-winning penalty.

Coach Elvis Fatovic hailed the performance of his team.

"Over the last four or five years we have had so many frustrations with penalty shoot outs, but finally we get a win," he said.

"I'm so proud of the whole team and staff ... but we will not finish here.

"Hungary have played a great tournament... but I also believe that we have a good chance against them if our defence is on."
