Aussie netball teams look for semi wins

Queensland Firebirds host the Mystics in Brisbane and NSW Swifts face the Magic in Hamilton in today's trans-Tasman netball semi-finals.

Netball's Super Sunday has arrived, with the two Australian teams striving for semi-final supremacy after scoring significantly more points than their New Zealand opponents during the season.

Australian conference winners Queensland Firebirds host New Zealand's runners-up the Mystics in Brisbane.

The New Zealand conference-winning Magic will play Australian runners-up, the NSW Swifts in Hamilton.

In the regular season matchups the Australian team prevailed on both occasions.

Under the old format New Zealand would have had just one finalist, Mystics, who would have finished fourth on points behind three Australian teams.

The new dual conference format guaranteed two teams from each nation would meet in the semi-finals.

Firebirds are red-hot title favourite due to an 11-match winning streak, while Mystics have dropped their past two matches.

They scored seven fewer points than Queensland over the season and have never beaten the Firebirds.

Mystics have lost eight and drawn one of their past nine games in Australia, where they haven't won for three years.

Magic scored eight fewer points than Swifts during the season and, under the old format, would have finished sixth and out of the finals for the first time ever.

However, two gutsy wins last week won them the NZ conference and hosting rights for a semi-final.

Former Swifts coach and current Magic mentor Julie Fitzgerald will be looking for a finals win over her old team for a second straight year.
